Raven Stratagems (Machineries of Empire, Book 2)

Raven Stratagems (Machineries of Empire, Book 2)

By Yoon Ha Lee

I loved the first book, Ninefox Gambit, by Yoon Ha Lee. The world-building is unique and fresh, the characters deeply flawed and yet still enough good and bad about each to keep me turning the pages. Just the way I like it.

Book 2 picks up where the first book left off. Jedao appears to have completely taken over Cheris’ body as well as a swarm. This book spends more time with other characters such as the hexarches (in particular Shuos) and members of the Kel swarm Jedao has hijacked. We get a better idea of the universe outside of Jedao and Cheris which is welcome as well as hints of a large conspiracy and machinations. With that said, there is not much advancement of the plot. Book 2 ends with a slightly larger picture but most questions from book 1 and the beginning of book 2 are still left unanswered.

With luck, book 3 will answer more of these but that remains to be seen.

If you enjoyed book 1, I’d recommend book 2 as a way to pass the time until book 3 and as an expansion on the Ninfox universe. Just don’t expect to see a lot of fireworks yet.
